As Creator/Performer

A history of drinking, self devised and performed at The Blue Room Studio, Northbridge, 2009. Mythophobic Productions.

"A theatrical evening in the company of Jeffrey Jay Fowler is never dull [...]. For this sold out season he borrows from stand-up comedy, avant-garde "happenings" and performance art. [...] As a writer, director, collaborator and performer he consistenly combines ingenuity, artistic integrity and popular appeal."
- Ali Taulbut, The West Australia, September 28, 2009

- Roberta Alves, australianstage.com.au

"[An] entertaining nutty joyride through puppetry, cabaret, song and dance. [...] Red Lashes' plot, [has been] put together with wit and tongue firmly in cheek by Jeffrey Jay Fowler."
- Pip Christmass, The West Australian

As Writer/Director

Zen's Red Mouth, performed at The Blue Room Theatre, Northrbidge Western Australia, 2006. Winner of The Blue Room Member's Choice award 2007. Zen's Red Mouth was the product of a two year development, starting with the 15 minute script "Mouth" for the 24 hour play festival in 2004. It was redeveloped at Edith Cowan University with performers Natalie Holmwood and Arielle Gray, and featured as part of Artrage's Northbridge festival in 2005. Zen's Red Mouth, the full length version, was first performed and workshopped by Natalie Holmwood, Arielle Gray and Sharney Nougher. Lighting design by Stephen Warren.

“Writer/director Jeffrey Jay Fowler is most certainly headed for a place in the spotlight. […] Combining bold theatricality, clever musical composition, and a strong sense of fun, Zen's Red Mouth features an abundance of playful visual imagery and impressive physical theatre with strongly embedded storytelling. Calling on such diverse elements of the performing arts, this carefully crafted piece takes every audience member on a tumultuous personal journey that is comic, soap operatic, and finally tragic. Fowler [...] is also responsible for a well-matched and intelligent soundtrack that only serves to heighten the experience.”
– Aaron Beach, Xpress Magazine

Hope is the saddest, performed at The Blue Room Studio, 2007, as part of the City of Perth's Winter Arts Festival. Winner of the 2008 Blue Room Best Production Award, and the 2008 Equity Award for Best Newcomer (Michelle Robin Anderson). Written by Jeffrey Jay Fowler through a devising process with Michelle Robin Anderson and Natalie Holmwood. The first incarnation was a monologue performed at the Artrage festival 2006 as part of Shorts and Solos. The full length version was originally performed by co-creators Michelle Robin Anderson and Natalie Holmwood along with Nicholas McRobbie. Performed in Brisbane for BF08 Under the radar by Michelle Robin Anderson, Arielle Gray and Timothy Watts. Set design for the original production by Amanda King. Lighting design by Christopher Isaacs.

“The play is an exciting blend of stylised performance set in a world of magical eccentricity […]. It moves entertains and delights. Fowler’s direction is tight and precise incorporating many styles: dance-like physical action, realistic dialogue scenes, narration and music.”
– Ali Taulbut, The West Australian

“There is so much to like about this production. It’s witty and profound in its simple truth that all life is chaos. See it.”
– Jan Hallam, The Sunday Times

The Rusalka Thread, performed at The Blue Room Studio, 2008, as part of the City of Perth's Winter Arts Festival. Workshopped by performers Oda Aunan, Jo Morris and Skye Sobejko. Initial concept by JJF and Natalie Holmwood. Set design by Amanda King. Lighting design by Christopher Isaacs.

"Either someone spiked my drink, or ‘The Rusalka Thread’ is a damn fine piece of theatre. I highly suspect the latter.[...] The entire cast and crew of The Rusalka Thread know exactly what they are doing, and they do it well. To get this level of ‘gelling’ between sound, costume, lights, set, actors, directors etc, for everything to be at a level that it works seamlessly well together, must require a team of people who are very dedicated to their art, and have got to known each other inside out. Maybe this is a good time to advertise the positive outcome of a work shopped piece of theatre? [...] The writing…what can I say? It’s a dream – a beautiful dream. Jeffrey Jay Fowler: What type of drugs have you been on? Endless thanks to you for writing exactly what freaks like me adore to see/read. If I didn’t already have one, I would marry your mind. It is not often one sees a piece of great theatre that doesn’t have its head up its own backside."

Duck, Duck, Goose!, performed at The Blue Room Theatre, 2008, as part of the Perth Pride Festival. Winner of the 2009 Blue Room Member's Choice Award. Written through a devising process with Arielle Gray, Sarah Reuben and Tim Watts. Gray Ruby Productions have plans underway to tour it in 2010.

“Elements of physical theatre, movement and animation are incorporated into just over an hour’s entertainment, making for a fast-paced and thoroughly enjoyable spectacle. Fowler’s writing is beautiful. [...] This is multi-arts with heart.”
– Varyna Bromilow, The West Australian

"Jeffrey Jay Fowler’s direction was punchy, he had the girls deliver their lines with naïve innocence, spoken condescendingly as they do on a TV children’s show. Three well thought out characters. Plenty of laughs from the script filled with insane similes. The applause lasted long after the actors left the stage."
- Gordon the Optom, Theatre Australia

As Performer

Alaska, by DC Moore. Performed at The Blue Room Studio, Northbridge, 2009. Performed role of Frank. Directed by Michelle Sowden. Hook In Eye Productions with permission from Methuen Drama.

"A relaxed Fowler was an excellent Frank. His own charm shines through Frank's unsavoury views, increasing audience sympathy for the character and his opinions. It may not have been intended that way but it added a disturbing layer to the thematic complexities. [...] Aggressive and amoral, he nevertheless exudes that sexual allure peculiar to disaffected youth."
- Ali Taulbut, The West Australian, June 12 2009

"Jeffrey Jay Fowler is compelling, completely believable, and comfortable in his role as ‘anti-hero’ Frank."
-Xpress Magazine, 25th June 2009
